Fellow Republicans,
North Carolina is a great state. There are, however some serious issues which face our legislators in the future.
Taxes
The current tax policy from the NC General Assembly is to spend and then tax. The first order of business is to prioritize our spending needs and then cut, consolidate, or eliminate spending.
Tax rates should be cut. Individuals and businesses are overwhelmed by their tax burden. Money left in the hands of the taxpayer has been shown repeatedly to be better for the economy.
The Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights is needed immediately to rein in government growth. This legislation would limit the growth of government to the increase in inflation and population growth. This link to the Americans for Prosperity website contains a wealth of knowledge on this legislation and North Carolina is one of the “Featured States” - www.americansforprosperity.org.
Education
Parents must have choices in the education of their children. Government should not dictate where our children are educated. The cap on the number of charter schools should be lifted. The results would be twofold – more personal attention to the educational needs of each child and lower demand for classroom space at our public schools.
Education choices must also be available for those parents who wish to provide a faith-based or home school environment for their children.
There is a strong choice movement in the state of North Carolina and one source of solid information is the North Carolina Education Alliance (www.nceducationalliance.org).
Illegal Immigration
The United States is a country of laws and North Carolina must work within this framework in dealing with illegal immigrants. Drivers licenses must be denied to illegal immigrants.
No one wishes to deny people from other countries the opportunity to come to the United States to find a better life. Our history would be vastly different if not for those immigrants who helped our country prosper. Immigration must, however, be allowed strictly within the constraints of the law.
Family Values
A society can only be as strong as its respect for life and honor of family and tradition. The Marriage Amendment must be passed in North Carolina. Without this constitutional protection, we face the threat of losing the bedrock upon which our society is based.
As your representative from District 40, I look forward to serving you in the North Carolina General Assembly.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Avila
